It is no secret that fashion frequently cribs from cinema for editorial inspiration and in the latest Vogue Paris, Terry Richardson recreates the look and feel of John Cassavetes’ film, Gloria. With Joan Smalls taking on the titular role and Géraldine Saglio styling, the VP version of things is considerably more glamourous, but the story is essentially the same – former mob mistresses becomes accidental guardian of a young boy. On the big screen that means shoot outs and grit and in the pages of Vogue that means playground trips and bright red Valentino gowns.

Both the edit and its inspiration are heavy on early 80s / late 70s chic, but we wouldn’t have minded if Joan went all badass and started taking down mobsters. We know the era of Emmanuelle Alt means that Vogue Paris is kindler and gentler, but with source material this fierce it seems a shame not to take things to the next level.

RYKIEL REVELATION: Sonia Rykiel has revealed she has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for 15 years. The French designer, who appeared increasingly frail in her last public appearances, decided to lift the lid on her illness in a new book cowritten with Judith Perrignon. “N’oubliez pas que je joue” (“Don’t forget it’s a game,” in English), from publishing house L’Iconoclaste, features Rykiel’s reflections on the disease, interspersed with Perrignon’s recollections of several meetings with the designer.

Rykiel, who has written several novels, revealed she had long kept her condition a secret, but had decided to speak out because she could no longer disguise the symptoms, which include trembling. “I don’t want to show my pain. I resisted, I hesitated, I tried to be invisible, to pretend that nothing was wrong. It’s impossible, it’s not like me,” she writes, adding that colleagues would not let her be photographed with the cane she has been using for several years. Rykiel was well enough to attend the last ready-to-wear show for her label on March 2.

Do you live around here?
I’m from Seattle. I came to see about a girl.

How ­exciting! Tell me more.
She’s a Rockette.

Amazing. How did you meet?
I went to Burning Man, and on the last day this girl walked up to me and jumped into my arms and we danced for twenty minutes.

Was coming here a grand gesture?
I played it a little cooler than that. I started a company with some friends and it has an office in New York. So, technically, I came to town to see if things were, you know, running well there. And, of course, they are.

Does the Rockette have a name?
Lauren. She’s a good person.

Has she shown you her high kicks?
Yeah, that was a good day.

And will you live happily ever after?
Well, we’re still having fun.

ALTUZARRA + J.CREW

When we heard that Altuzarra was pairing up with J.Crew we were expecting to see some of the unbridled energy of his Corto Maltese inspired F/W collection, or maybe a few of those psychedelic prints from Spring / Summer. The absolute last thing we saw coming were striped sweater dresses and espadrilles. We admire Altuzarra for keeping us on our toes, but we can’t help but hope that he’ll be sneaking in a thigh high slit somewhere into the collection.

JASON WU + NEST FRAGRANCES

Any combo that smells as good as this is a-ok with us. The delicious blend of Cattleya orchid, nashi pear, pomegranate and goji berry is downright intoxicating and in true Nest form the candle’s scent is just enough to fill a room without becoming overwhelming. Fans of Wu’s ladylike designs will not be disappointed, this is easily one of the most beautiful candles to make its debut of late; the delicate petals from the S/S 12 Wu show are emblazoned right on the vessel.

NEAL’S YARD + SAM RODDICK

Collaboration is about more than just cute designer goods, sometimes it all comes back to helping mother earth. Natural beauty pioneers Neal’s Yard Remedies have teamed up with activist Sam Roddick for the Bee Lovely and Help Save the Bees campaign. For every tube sold Neal’s Yard is making a $1.50 donation to Buglife, Landlife and Pesticide Action Network UK, all of whom are working towards saving the world’s dwindling bee population. KENZO + VANS

Amazing patterns, comfortable sneakers – what’s not to love? Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Kenzo have paired up with VANS for a limited edition set of shoes that feature those great net prints from the S/S collection. The first pair comes out in May at select locations – ie. Kenzo shops, Colette, Lane Crawford and of course, Opening Ceremony.

WITHOUT THE HITCH: Vanity Fair held a spirited memorial service for Christopher Hitchens on Friday afternoon, in the Great Hall of Cooper Union. Graydon Carter welcomed attendees — who included colleagues Anna Wintour and David Remnick, as well as Tina Brown, Stephen Fry, Steve Kroft of “60 Minutes” and Jason Sudeikis — with a description of Hitchens as a wit, a charmer and a bit of a scalawag. “He was the beau ideal of the public intellectual,” Carter said. “He was an editor’s dream, and he was a reader’s dream.”

Those who participated in the program — including Tom Stoppard, Christopher Buckley, Salman Rushdie, Ian McEwan, Sean Penn and Olivia Wilde — chose to largely rely upon Hitchens’ words instead of their own, reading from the late journalist’s books and articles published over four decades. Penn read from a Vanity Fair piece published in 2006 on the poisonous aftermath of Agent Orange on civilians in Vietnam. Buckley chose the memoir “Hitch-22,” while Stoppard drew laughter while reading Hitchens’ description of a Prague policeman as a man “with eyes so close together he could comfortably get by with a monocle.”

Fry said, “One of the great pleasures of knowing Christopher was having him disagree with you.” He shared Hitchens’ opinion that “the four most overrated things in life are Champagne, lobster, anal sex and picnics,” to which Fry, who is gay, responded, “Three out of four isn’t bad.”

During his eulogy, Martin Amis explained how their shared idea of happiness involved taking a bottle of whiskey into a film like “Dirty Beast.” He recalled how Hitchens would employ the phrase “What could be more agreeable?” to describe something he enjoyed. Ending on a wishful note, Amis said, “What could be more intimately agreeable, imagine what it would do to your heart, if the Hitch had landed, and he was on his way to join us here.”

It’s fair to say Hitchens would have found very agreeable the cocktail-fueled party afterward, held at The Waverly Inn.

Even if you aren’t a blushing bride, there were some interesting trends happening during NY’s Bridal Fashion Week. Vera Wang went for crimson with a round of bright red gowns, Oscar de La Renta also showed red looks, but the highlight of his show were the Spanish influenced gowns topped off with mantilla veils.

HAUTE SHOTS: For the last seven years, German photographer Cathleen Naundorf has been making haunting large-format Polaroids of couture dresses in fantastical settings. Some 100 of these images are published in the coffee table book “Haute Couture, The Polaroids of Cathleen Naundorf,” due to be released by Prestel Publishing on May 15 in Europe and June 15 in the U.S.

A disciple of legendary photographer Horst P. Horst, Naundorf worked closely with Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, Elie Saab, Valentino and Christian Dior to create the images, using increasingly rare 4-by-5-inch or 8-by-10-inch Polaroid films. A selection of the photographs will be shown at the Bernheimer Fine Art Photography gallery in Munich from June 20 to late July.

HM offers a kiss for a cause with their latest campaign for Fashion Against Aids. Directed by Dan Martensen and featuring a cast of model couples, the ad is cool, romantic and offers a look at the most important thing there is – love. Of course HM isn’t just offering lip service – 25% of the purchase price of all Fashion Against Aids items goes towards AIDS Prevention. MDC caught up with the campaign’s casting directors Daniel Peddle Drew Dasent at Daniel Peddle Casting to find out more about the ad and the process behind the scenes.

MDC: What was the most enjoyable aspect of casting this campaign?

Daniel and Drew: Working with Jenny Friedberg at Creative Chaos on such a positive campaign and meeting such amazingly diverse real couples in love.

MDC: Fashion has always been such a huge support in the fight against AIDS. What other charities or initiatives have caught your eye?

Daniel and Drew: Doctors Without Borders does incredible work, Operation Smile is another favorite of ours which is enjoying a boost from supporters in fashion like Lydia Hearst and J. Lindeberg. We also are big fans of the work of God’s Love We Deliver.

MDC: What do you hope that people will take away after viewing this campaign?

Daniel and Drew: That we really are all the same and love has no boundaries.
